Resumen: Historic rural church buildings are situated within a broader natural and human landscape with a history of local agents and communities taking care of and using the building. Demographic changes and changing patterns of religiosity threaten this situation. But the buildings and their wider cultural and natural landscape retain enormous value. Surveys we have carried in the UK and Denmark show a striking level of support for retaining them for community uses. How can this be done in a way which is appropriate to very different settings, where the initiative comes from the locality, and where heritage is given a new lease of life?

Sobre la autora: She undertakes empirical research investigating the process of change in the Danish folk church under the pressures of individualization and marketization. Specifically, she investigates how these pressures may affect the folk church's ability to build up social capital in Danish society.
